The 6 Best Weed Eaters for Women – Reviews 2024
1. BLACK+DECKER LST300 Weed Whacker – Best Overall
The BLACK+DECKER LST300 Weed Whacker runs off of a 20 V battery, which allows it to run much longer than most of the competition. The power drive transmission also delivers more power, destroying plants on the first hit and allowing you to work more efficiently. An automatic spool feeder eliminates the need for bumping. We loved this feature because it means less that we have to worry about.
You can also convert this weed eater to a trimmer very quickly. This is a common feature for new, high-quality weed eaters. We consider this a very nice feature to have and eliminates the need for a separate tool, saving you money in the long run.
We particularly liked that this weed eater is lightweight, so practically anyone can use it. It is also very adjustable with many different height positions, allowing even very short and very tall people to use it comfortably. This is an essential feature for women since most weed eaters are designed for men, who are taller than the average woman.
The cutting area is 12 inches, which is about average. Most users will find this area plenty big enough for their needs.
- 20V battery
- Automatic spool feeder
- Power drive transmission
- Lightweight
- Very adjustable
- Not for heavy-duty work
2. Greenworks Cordless String Trimmer – Best Value
For those on a budget, it doesn’t get any better than the Greenworks 21332 Cordless String Trimmer. It runs off of a 40V battery, though this is sold separately. Batteries can be expensive, so you’ll have to consider this into your tool cost. You can purchase the battery with the tool for a slight discount. You’ll need the charger for the battery as well, which can also drive up the cost. But, if you already have an appropriate battery, you can save quite a bit of money. This is the best weed eater for the money.
This tool features a 13-inch cutting path, which is a bit wider than most on the market. However, the extra inch likely won’t be noticed much by the average homeowner. It is a helpful upgrade, but not something we consider necessary.
With multiple pivoting head options, this string trimmer is very versatile. You can trim at multiple angles, which can be a lifesaver in some situations. The head also rotates 90° and has an edging wheel, allowing it to morph into an edger in only a few seconds. This eliminates the need for a separate tool and saves you even more money.
- Inexpensive
- 13-foot cutting path
- Pivoting head
- Can turn into an edge trimmer
- Battery sold separately
3. Husqvarna Detachable Gas String Trimmer – Premium Choice
If you spend a lot of time doing yard work, you may want to consider splurging on a premium weed eater. You’ll spend a bit more on the front end, but if you spend a lot of time with your weed eater, you’ll thank yourself for it later.
There are quite a few premium string trimmers on the market, most of which would be suitable for most women to use. However, out of all the premium trimmers we looked at, we liked the Husqvarna 128LD Detachable Gas String Trimmer the most. It comes with a powerful motor and a 17-inch trimmer head, which is far more extensive than most of those currently on the market.
This model does not run on batteries. Instead, it runs on a mixture of unleaded gas and 2-cycle oil. You’ll spend a bit of money on gas over the long run. But, the use of gas instead of electricity means this trimmer is more powerful than most of the others on the market. Replacing the trimmer line is very easy, thanks to this machine’s simple design. To release more trimmer line as you’re working, you tap the head against the grass. It is not automatic, which is one of the reasons it is not our first choice.
- 17-inch trimmer head
- More powerful than most
- Trimmer line is easy to replace
- Translucent fuel tank
- New trimmer line is not released automatically
- Expensive
4. Makita LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer
The Makita XRU02Z LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer delivers quite a bit of power, which improves the cutting speed and overall performance. The ergonomic design is surprisingly well-balanced. This machine weighs only 6.4 pounds without the battery, which is light enough for practically anyone to use. The compact size is perfect for smaller yards and beginners who may not be able to handle a more massive machine. It isn’t going to fatigue you very quickly, even if you aren’t used to extensive yard work.
The telescoping shaft allows for the machine to be even more compact if necessary. You can also make it longer if you need to, depending on your height. This adjustability is excellent for both men and women, though women will likely find it particularly helpful.
One major downside of this machine is that the battery and charge are sold separately. This means you’ll need to spend more money than the listed price. This tool is already decently expensive, so that adds even more money to the overall price.
- Telescoping shaft
- Lightweight
- Adjustable
- Battery sold separately
5. PowerSmart Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer
Like many modern weed eaters, the PowerSmart PS76110A Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer can also turn into an edger. It does this by simply rotating the head, which can be done in only a few moments. The handle is very adjustable and comfortable. You should have no issue adjusting it to fit your needs. It runs off of a 20V battery, which should provide plenty of power for the average homeowner. It can run for a decently long time, making it usable for most average-sized yards. The battery charges quite fast as well, so even if you have to stop halfway to recharge it, you should not have to wait long.
The spool is automatically fed, so you don’t have to worry about it at all. This makes the machine more comfortable to use overall and eliminates one more thing you have to worry about.
We also liked how this machine is lightweight. It weighs only 7.5 pounds. This is a bit more than some other options, but it shouldn’t be a problem at all for most users.
With all of that said, the cutting diameter is a bit short at only 10 inches. With such a low diameter, you’ll be spending more time doing your yard overall. You may not notice much of a difference depending on the weed eater you’re currently using. Still, we generally recommend getting a weed eater with a higher diameter.
- Lightweight
- Long-lasting battery
- 20V battery
- Low cutting diameter
6. CRAFTSMAN WEEDWACKER String Trimmer
For the price, this CRAFTSMAN CMCST960E1 WEEDWACKER String Trimmer isn’t worth it. It is quite expensive and doesn’t come with many amazing features to make the extra cost seem reasonable. It has a brushless motor and a decently long runtime. However, it is comparable with some of the cheaper models we reviewed. The pole is adjustable, but this is a standard feature across most weed eaters.
This weed eater is bump-fed. While this is a pretty usual method, we expected it to be automatic for the price. The cutting swath is decently long at 15-inches. However, we have reviewed some similarly priced models that can cut more at once. This machine does come with a 4-year limited warranty. Warranties are always lovely when you’re spending this much on a tool. However, the warranty is quite limited so that most things won’t be covered.
The weed eater is also a bit flimsy. This would be fine if it was a budget model, but it isn’t. We were sorely disappointed. The throttle trigger is a little challenging to figure out as well. If you let it go too quickly, the machine stops. It takes a bit to get used to it.
- 15-inch cutting diameter
- Expensive
- Bump-fed
- Minimal warranty
Buyers Guide – How to Choose the Best Weed Eater for Women
There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a weed eater. Most of these machines are made with men in mind, so things like adjustability and size become paramount when you’re a woman trying to pick out a model.
In this section, we’ll go over all the information you need to keep in mind when choosing the perfect model for your situation. We will also take a look at some common questions involving weed eaters, where you may find the answer to any lingering questions you have.
Adjustability
On average, women are usually shorter than men. This can be a problem when it comes to using machines like weed eaters, which tend to be made with a man’s height in line. Using a weed eater that is made for someone much taller than you can be extremely uncomfortable and even painful. Because of this, adjustability is paramount if you’re shorter or taller than the average man.
Most weed eaters come with telescoping poles, which is precisely what you want. However, you should double-check to ensure that it is very adjustable. Some poles are telescoping but don’t adjust very much. Adjustable handles are also useful.
Overall, you want as adjustable of a machine as you can get.
Power Source
Weed eaters can be divided into two main categories: gas and electric.
Electric Weed Eaters
Electric weed eaters are almost always powered by batteries, though some corded versions also exist. Each of these power sources is valid, but each one is better suited to certain situations.
Corded options are only going to be useful for those with tiny yards. The cord has a limited length, which makes it impossible to use the weed eater in a more substantial yard without long extension cords. They can be a cheaper option for those with minuscule yards or those who don’t use a weed eater often. Generally, though, we don’t recommend them.
Battery-powered options are the new go-to. They are convenient and easy to use. Everyone knows how to charge a battery, though not everyone knows how to mix fuel for a weed eater correctly. Battery options only run for so long, however, and you’ll need to remember to charge the battery between each use.
Gas Weed Eaters
Models that run off of gas are more traditional than other options. Before batteries became strong enough to run these machines, weed eaters almost exclusively ran off of gas. These machines are the most powerful option available. You don’t have to remember to charge their batteries, and you don’t have to wait for them to recharge.
However, you do have to mix and buy your fuel, which can get expensive in the long run. They are also decently louder than an electrical option, making them less suitable for tightly packed neighborhoods and areas with noise laws.
Weight
Preferably, any weed eater you purchase should be extremely light. These machines vary quite a bit in weight. There are some burdensome options, while others weigh around five pounds. Because weed eaters are unusually long and the weight is spread out, they can often fatigue you faster than you’d think. You probably need a lighter machine than you realize.
Many of those we reviewed are decently lightweight and should be suitable for most people. If you can’t carry a significant amount of weight for whatever reason, you may want to pay particular attention to this feature.
